Set in East Durham, the gem of the Irish Catskills, the Banjo Burke Festival has celebrated the life and music of Joe “Banjo” Burke and the vibrant traditional musical scene of New York City and the beautiful Catskill mountains since 2007. The festival celebrates Irish traditional music (instrumental and song) and ceili dancing, pure and sweet. The weekend is packed full of music and ceili and set dance workshops, concerts, ceilithe, and traditional music sessions.
Joe’s career was cut short by Parkinson’s disease. The last seven years of his life were a devastating series of losses of all the abilities that had meant so much to him. He passed away at the age of 57. We have started Banjo Burke Memorial Fund to honor Joe’s memory by supporting Parkinson’s Research and Irish traditional arts and sports. Donors may specify which purpose they wish to support.
